LED Aluminium Profiles: The Complete Guide for Architects and Interior Designers

LED Aluminium Profiles for Architectural Lighting

A bare LED strip stuck to a surface is rarely the finished product. LED aluminium profiles — also called LED channels or extrusions — serve three essential functions: they protect the strip from damage, dissipate heat to extend LED lifespan, and diffuse the light to create a smooth, professional finish.

Surface Mounted Profiles

The simplest installation method. The profile sits on top of the surface and is fixed with screws or adhesive. Available in a wide range of sizes from slim 7mm profiles for shelf lighting to large 101×67mm architectural profiles for cove ceiling details.

Best for: Retrofit projects, shelving, display cases, and anywhere that doesn’t require a flush finish.

Recessed Profiles

Installed by routing a channel into timber, MDF, plasterboard, or concrete. The result is a flush, seamless lighting element that appears to be part of the architecture itself.

  • Trimless/borderless — the diffuser sits perfectly flush with the surrounding surface
  • With visible trim — a small flange is visible, easier to install and retrofit
  • Corner profiles — 45° angle profiles for illuminating internal corners and stair nosings

Best for: High-end residential, hospitality, and commercial interiors where the lighting element should disappear into the architecture.

Drywall / Plasterboard Profiles

Designed to be plastered over, leaving only the diffuser visible. The profile is installed during construction and the surrounding plasterboard is finished to meet it.

Best for: New build hospitality, high-end residential, and commercial projects where specification happens at the design stage.

Architectural Cove Profiles

Large-format profiles (up to 143×46mm) designed specifically for indirect cove and coffer lighting. They create the wide, even wash of light on ceilings and walls that defines premium interior spaces.

Diffuser Options

All YIZEE profiles are available with:

  • Clear PC diffuser — maximum light output, LED dots may be slightly visible
  • Frosted/opal diffuser — smooth, dot-free appearance (recommended with COB strips)
  • Milky white diffuser — maximum diffusion, slight reduction in light output

Heat Dissipation

Aluminium conducts heat 200× better than plastic. For high-power strips (over 14W/m), always use a proper aluminium profile. This can extend LED strip lifespan from 30,000 hours to over 50,000 hours.
