Walk into any lighting distributor and you’ll encounter RGB, RGBW, RGBWW, COB, and a dozen other variations. Making the wrong choice means expensive replacement later. Here’s what you actually need to know.
Standard RGB LED Strips
RGB strips use three separate LED chips — Red, Green, and Blue — mounted in sequence along the strip. By mixing these three colors at different intensities, they can produce millions of color combinations.
Best for: Accent lighting, gaming setups, entertainment areas, and anywhere color-changing effects are the primary purpose.
Limitation: RGB strips cannot produce true white light. The “white” you get from mixing R+G+B looks cold and slightly purple — noticeable in applications where real white light matters.
RGBW and RGBWW LED Strips
RGBW strips add a dedicated White chip to the RGB set. RGBWW adds a Warm White chip instead. This solves the artificial-looking white problem entirely.
Best for: Hospitality, residential living spaces, and any installation where you want both dynamic color effects AND natural-looking white or warm white illumination.
Key spec to check: CRI (Color Rendering Index) of the white chip. Look for CRI 90+ for spaces where accurate color rendering matters — retail, art galleries, and high-end residential.
COB LED Strips: The Premium Choice
COB (Chip-on-Board) technology places hundreds of tiny LED chips densely along the strip — typically 480 to 784 chips per meter — creating a continuous line of light with no visible dots.
Key advantages:
- Dot-free effect — no hot spots visible even through diffusers
- Ultra-smooth illumination — ideal for cove lighting, architectural details, and premium interiors
